National Treasure or Local Treasure
You don't need to be Nicholas Cage to go treasure-hunting. For years, White Electronics has been selling metal detectors in TV commercials. The Discovery Channel has been recounting the treasure finds off of Florida in numerous documentaries. And National Treasure resulted in a successful sequel. Treasure hunting has an appeal common to all...the attraction of the mysterious as well as the search for riches. As always, your budget determines what you buy for your gift.
Treasure Detectors. Metal detectors are being sold on TV and even at WalMart. Although they do sell for as little as $100, you get what you pay for. A simple device would be fine for a beginner but it is recommended you read up a little on the subject before buying one in a book like The Urban Treasure Hunter.
Treasure Maps. For the beginner, this means actually means buying some books and magazines with treasure tales and accompanying maps. Buy new or used. If you buy used through Amazon, for example, I suggest you get a bunch. You can also check new or used bookstores. As for real Treasure Island/Long John Silver treasure maps, if they were any good, they wouldn't be for sale. However, for $69.95 plus $5.00 shipping and handling, you can order a CD online with the National Shipwrecks Database with more than 100,000 American shipwrecks from Northern Maritime Research..
Treasure References. National Treasure was all about research to solve the mystery. More books and magazines for basic information on treasure-hunting techniques. There are a number of books out there such as a book by Robert Marx who found in 1972 the treasure ship Maravilla and wrote "Buried Treasures You Can Find." Magazines are popular and you can subscribe. Don't forget eBay.
Magazines. There are plenty of treasure magazines. You can get a gift subscription to one or more. As a stocking stuffer, you can compile a list of websites, put the list inside a book or magazine on treasure hunting.
Treasure Loot. You've seen the ads on TV for salvaged coins from treasure wrecks. Check with a coin dealer for a genuine piece of eight or other old coin that resembles reported treasure loot. After all, your would-be treasure hunter needs an example of what he's looking for, right? For a cheap stocking stuffer, come up with a card to which gem and rock samples are glued as an example of the kind of treasure ore found in mines.
Treasure Trips. See some real treasure on display in museums or visit some of the better known treasure locations. Indian artifacts at Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site where the largest Indian city north of Mexico once thrived, visit the Superstition Mountain where search continues to this day for the Lost Dutchman Mine, check out Civil War artifacts at Gettsyburg or Chickamauga battlefield museums, search for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park in Alabama where a 13-year-old girl found a 2.93-carat diamond in the summer of 2007, or visit the Atocha shipwreck treasure at the Mel Fisher Museum in downtown key West and Greene and Whitehead Streets. Use your imagination to come up with other sites, near or far, that you can visit during a day trip or a lengthy vacation.
Treasure Movies. You can go for the classic fiction like Treasure Island and National Treasure or for the real-life documentaries available at the History Channel, the Travel Channel, and A&E websites. Run a check on Amazon and see if you can get it cheaper.
